I think of the moments life has taken my breath away — in the most beautiful sense. Some loud, some soft. Wading through tidepools on Cape Cod, discovering tiny worlds hidden in plain sight. Snorkeling in Jamaica, lowered from the boat into a world I’d never known. I was scared for a moment. Then I let go, sank into the crystal water — into color, movement, life — and didn’t want to come up for air.

And then, the whale. No warning. No hush. Just the sudden rush and crash of water as it rose beside the boat — massive, powerful, and unimaginably close. I was standing at the edge when it emerged, humbled and in awe, caught in a moment so magical I could barely breathe. It sank back into the deep, then swam away, its beautiful tail breaking the surface one last time before disappearing into the blue.

I felt that same deep awe the first time I saw David in Florence. Larger than life in a way no photograph could prepare me for, I kept circling him, unable to take in his scale, his detail, the quiet power of his presence. It was humbling, almost otherworldly — a reminder of how art can stop time.
